6 sections0:00Thursday's session had traders watching semiconductors steal the show with Intel surging double digits, Marvel technology putting up a strong day, and oil field giant SLB moving hard in the opposite direction. The headline driving it all, Intel's reported Apple deal, and what it could mean for the domestic chip story.
0:21Technology led every sector on the board today, climbing just over 3% with consumer discretionary adding about 1 and a half and industrials rounding out the top three. On the other side of the ledger, energy shed 1.65%, financials and healthcare both pulled back close to 1%. That kind of rotation, growth, and cyclical tech in favor, defensives, and commodities under pressure tends to reflect a risk-on appetite in the market, at least for one session.
0:50Gold futures saw volume come in at more than 10 times the average rate today and prices fell nearly 3%. That kind of participation in a down move often signals strong conviction from sellers, not just noise. Johnson and Johnson traded at 2.3 times its normal volume while dropping 2.5%.
1:11Suggesting there was real interest behind that decline worth watching. Texas Instruments was also active at just over twice average volume, but here the story was a nearly 7% gain. Elevated volume on an upday can indicate broad participation in a move, not just a thin squeeze. Intel exploded more than 10 12% today on heavy volume running about 1.6 times its 20-day average, which the automated system flags as a breakout signal at full strength. The RSI is sitting at 64, not yet in overbought territory. So technically, there may still be room before momentum gets stretched. With the 50-day moving average already above the 200 day, the longerterm trend structure was already constructive heading into this move. SLB dropped 4 1/2% today and the automated system is registering a full strength breakdown signal on the name. What stands out technically is the RSI has fallen all the way to 29, which puts it deep in what analysts typically call oversold territory, a level where some traders watch closely for potential exhaustion of selling pressure. Volume was elevated at 1.6 times average, adding weight to the move, though an oversold reading alone does not confirm a reversal.
2:32Marvel Technology gained more than 7% today with volume running nearly three times the 20-day average. That kind of participation behind an up move draws attention. The automated signal here is neutral, meaning the technicals do not yet confirm a directional setup despite the price action. RSI at 65 keeps it just inside neutral momentum territory and the 50-day above the 200 day keeps the broader trend structure intact for those tracking the chart. A big day for semiconductors, a rough one for energy and defensive names. As always, the signals here are technical and automated, so do your own work before drawing any conclusions.
