0:00Thursday's close was a tale of two markets. Rivian Automotive and Robin Hood markets surged while tech struggled and Ethereum posted a solid gain as crypto caught a bid heading into the holiday weekend. Healthcare led all sectors up 2% with utilities and consumer staples close behind. That defensive tilt suggests money rotating away from risk and towards stability. On the losing side, technology shed nearly 3% with consumer discretionary and communication services also in the red.

0:33When defensives lead and tech lags, it often signals a more cautious posture from institutional participants. Gold futures saw extraordinary volume today, trading at nearly 17 times their average pace while gaining 1.7% on the session. That kind of volume multiple on an upday in gold points to unusually strong conviction and interest from market participants. Technically, it is the sort of activity that analysts watch closely when assessing momentum in safe haven assets. Rivian Automotive jumped over 8% today, backed by volume running 2 and a half times its 20-day average.

1:14That kind of participation tends to add weight to a move. The automated signal here reads as a breakout with RSI sitting at 65, which is elevated but not yet in overbought territory. Worth noting that the 50-day moving average remains below the 200 day. So technically the longerterm trend structure is still one traders would want to watch carefully.

1:37Robin Hood markets climbed nearly 4% on the session with the automated system flagging a breakout signal though at a moderate strength level. RSI at 67 puts momentum in a firm but not extreme range and volume came in about 20% above average solid participation but not the kind of blowout volume that marks the most decisive moves. The same caveat applies here as with Rivian. The 50-day MA is still trailing the 200day which is a structural headwind in classic technical terms.

2:10Ethereum added over 5% today, riding what appears to be broader crypto strength heading into the long weekend. The automated signal is neutral on this one. RSI is right at 50, which is about as middle of the road as it gets from a momentum standpoint. Volume was modestly above average at 1.3 times the norm. And with the 50-day still below the 200 day, technically oriented traders would likely want to see a sustained push before drawing conclusions about trend direction. KLA was the standout loser on the screen today, falling over 11 12% in a session that was already rough for the broader semiconductor and technology space. Volume ran about 40% above average, meaning this was not a quiet drift lower. There was clear selling interest behind the move. RSI landed near 50 despite the drop. And while the 50-day remains above the 200 day for now, a decline of this magnitude in a single session is exactly the kind of event that technical analysts flag as potentially altering the near-term setup. As always, these signals are generated by automated technical systems and are meant to educate and inform.
